Getting Fit the Fun way in Nigeria – Fuzion Fitness where Zumba meets Booiaka & Afro Dance

I’m sure there’s alot of people out there who like me have dreams of becoming super fit. Sexy toned arms and legs to die for.. but well.. it’s still kind of in the dream stage. The reality of actually going out to the gym seems to always some how not quite fit into my daily life. Something always comes up which means I can’t go.. or don’t want to go.  I then decided to build a gym at home.. which was a fantastic idea.  I now have machines to hang my clothes on while waiting to be ironed.  And don’t let me start on all those dvds I bought.. waiting for those moments when the Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, CSI, Law & Order or even the 10pm news aren’t on.   I mean.. with all my best intentions. It just never happens! So thank God my sister and her husband (or should I say my brother and his wife .. sorry bro.. you know I love you but she’s my gurl!).. where was I.. ok …

Henna/Mehendi Tips for Weddings & Other Celebrations

In the last few days we’ve been obsessing on henna at REN ladies center, creating different designs for various occasions  Which reminded me of my life in the Middle-east; we wore henna for every celebration and especially weddings and engagement parties but sometimes when girls got together we had henna done as part of entertainment. The designs varied from simple lines, letters, flowers to intricate elegant floral patterns and abstracts. Always envied the girls whose henna got really deep reddish-brown and color obsession was a trend which lead to different henna mixes; chemicals were included to make it darker or even black. Which also enticed manufacturers to come up with different brands, worse of which is the black henna which often contains harmful parabens that can result to severe allergic reaction. Luckily, I have seen many concoctions of henna from Arabic, Afghani, Somali, Sudanese to Pakistani and Indian, some of them resulted to beautiful shades but itchy skin and some of them turned out beautifully, naturally. We’ve been growing henna in our backyard for generations; for …

Doing it the Natural Way – Cucumber to the Rescue

By Tolu Orekoya So.. picture this.. you’re about to have an indulgent night in  pampering yourself with a relaxing beauty treatment. I’m curious. Does that image include a face mask complete with the obligatory cucumber slices covering your eyes?  It’s a classic image that has been used for years in films and adverts. But does it actually work…YES.. it does! And it’s not just for your eyes but for your skin too.

Be Natural…Try the Kitchen.

I woke up this morning and thanks to the mirror in front of my bed (yes I’m vain like that :p) I looked at my face…..and I let out a huge smile. okay okay, I’mnot smiling out of admiration or sheer vanity, I’m smiling because my acne scars are gradually fading and the new acne or pimples trying to start a war were literally gone. I never suffered from acne as a teenager till I had my first warm oil facial in beauty school. I have combination skin and everyone that knows me knows I hate oil on my face. My mum once told me “apply olive oil on your face child…..its amazing” and I rolled my eyes the whole day…(random story)…..anyway back to my warm oil facial and the marks it left on my face….

Spa Pedicures – Are they really worth it?

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a Spa Pedicure or a normal Pedicure? I’ll tell you what, it’s a lot more than just  a professional toenail job. A Spa Pedicure is a procedure which cleans and removes the dead skin cells from the feet and toenails. It helps prevent nail diseases. The pedicure is also accompanied by a foot massage that rejuvenates the skin as well as relaxing the muscles. But what really sets it apart is the fact that it’ll be a longer service, with more steps — an aromatic exfoliating scrub, hydrating mask, hot towel wrap, jelly pedicures and paraffin dips are also on the menu at alot of places and this are the things that’ll make the spa pedicure last longer and feel more luxurious. If you’re more adventurous, you can invest in a fish pedicures (where you dip your feet into a tank full of tiny fish which nibble away at the hard skin on your feet!  But in general, they will help to remove excess dead hard …

Those Pesky Little White Spots – Tackling Milia

Hey guys, when I originally wrote this article in 2011 I didn’t realise how popular it would become!  On average we have 500+ views a day, just on this post alone.  Thanks to those who have shared their experiences. They say that a problem shared is a problem solved.  So please do share any advice or any secrets to how you battled (and hopefully won) your fight with Milia.   The funniest thing is that in 2013 my daughter was born with Milia.  I’d never personally experienced it only treated clients.  I had to fight hard not to panic. It must have been baby brain or something because I forgot everything I knew.  I actually had to come back to the site and re-read what I’d written myself just to calm myself down.  People kept commenting on the “small spots on her face” which became really irritating very quickly. As a new parent you become very defensive over your baby and any criticism.  So I found myself having to educate alot of strangers and all …

Video: Layering Skincare: Night Time

People are always asking us what the real benefits are of using so many products in the evening.  Is it all an advertising gimmick and a waste of money?  No, it’s not. I can’t stress how important not just a good daytime skincare routine is but also having a great night time routine as well. I know that alot of people feel using a combination of  products are really time consuming, they’d probably scream if I suggested using 7 different items before you go to bed!! But I found this really cute video and Asian women are known for being very particular about their skincare…. it shows. 😀

Hammam – Scrubbing Away the Moroccan Way

A Hammam (which in Arabic means “spreader of warmth”) is a traditional cleansing ritual that many Moroccans take part of once a week. Think of a hammam as urrmm….an oversized sauna. First you enter a warm steam room to let your pores open, followed by a coating of olive oil soap. Then (the part that foreigners find freaky)….the “gommage”…..this is where all the dead layers of skin are rubbed off with a glove that feels like it is made of super rough sand paper. You’re then covered in a full body clay mask, which is washed off with ice-cold water to close your pores (eek!!). The ritual ends with a soothing massage.

Skincare Tips: Taming the oil – Revealing a glow

Have you ever wondered how you could make your skin glow?  Ever meet someone and just couldn’t help admire their beautiful skin? Here are a few suggestions on how you can get that kind of skin.  Most are easy, simple and cost very little. So treat your skin with care and watch your skin glow. To properly care for your skin, you have to first identify your skin type.  Skin is usually categorised into either dry, sensitive, oily or both i.e. combination skin.  A high percentage of African/Caribbean skins will tend to be combination/oily skin types but skin dosen’t depend on your race, genetics, lifestyle & age all contribute to determine your type. If you fall into this category, the bad news is that while you are more likely to suffer from outbreaks and the dreaded shine (usually when you’re at an event or party praying that you don’t look like someone’s just fried an egg on your face because all your make-up seems to have literally melted off your face) the good news is that you are less likely to develop wrinkles at a young age.

From Hollywood to Bollywood with a little Brazillian inbetween (or more commonly The Different Types of Bikini Waxing)

Sooo… Apparently Love is in the air..  well then now may be the time to invest a little and indulge in some secret gardening, trimming the hedge, clear up the weeds .. ok I guess you get the idea by now. I’ll always remember while growing up the mere mention of waxing would send spine tingling shudders down my spine. Frankly, I couldn’t think of anything worse!  But to be honest, the first time I ever lay down and bared it all in the open to my therapist, my initial fear and embarrassment was very quickly forgotten when I experienced the almighty shock of hot wax being ripped off my most intimate parts! Looking back on it now I have to laugh.  Now I can’t imagine how I lived without it.
