Doing it the Natural Way – Cucumber to the Rescue

By Tolu Orekoya

So.. picture this.. you’re about to have an indulgent night in  pampering yourself with a relaxing beauty treatment.

I’m curious. Does that image include a face mask complete with the obligatory cucumber slices covering your eyes?  It’s a classic image that has been used for years in films and adverts. But does it actually work…YES.. it does!

And it’s not just for your eyes but for your skin too.

It’s believed that cucumber helps in reducing swelling around those big dark circles under your eyes. The secret? The high amount of water content in the vegetable. Cucumbers are almost 90 percent water, and is great for hydrating the skin.

Research also shows that because pH levels (i.e. its level of acidity or alkalinity) of cucumber and human skin are nearly identical, cucumber and its cucumber based products are very easy to deal with and very soothing as well. It can soften, and soothe your skin and for the most part won’t cause a reaction. It is why it is such a popular ingredient is so many cosmetics.

But best of all, its almost magical cooling effect is fabulous!  As a bonus, you can also juice it and take it on the go with you. (Preferably not the slices you’ve used on your face..)

Here’s a great cucumber face mask for you to try:

Blend 4 – 5 leafs of fresh mint.

Peel and deseed the cucumber.

Add mint leaves to the cucumber to make a puree.

Beat egg white and keep it separate, then add this egg white to the cucumber mixture.

Apply this evenly on your face for 20 minutes and then rinse it with water and pat it dry.

Cucumber also makes an excellent facial when mixed with items like avocado, honey, and ground oats. Additionally, the cucumber is such a soothing natural produce that it can also be used on its own as part of a skin care routine. Cucumber products can leave you with smooth, cool, healthy skin that feels relaxed and refreshed.

So what are you waiting for. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it so you may want to get to out to the supermarket and grab yourself some cucumber!
